ADULT SKATERS

Derby and skating are important to me because I love being part of a team. Derby is a real contact sport and there's nothing like putting your body on the line knowing your teammates got your back & vice versa. Training for roller derby has helped me learn strong my body & spirit are and taught me how to put those skills to good use - especially when weaving through crowds at concerts! 

My favorite skating moments are when I am able to play pivot and get my jammer out of a tight spot whether that's with a quick offensive maneuver or a sneaky star-pass. When it works out & the hammer speeds away with all their points, it's just the best feeling! 

If I had one super power, it would be shapeshifting; it would be sick to try out being a bird AND a dolphin!

Derby and skating are important to me because skating has brought me some of my best memories and best friends. It keeps me motivated, confident, and most of all happy!

My favorite skating moments are when I first dropped into the keyhole at Memorial skatepark! I wasn’t sure if I could do it, but then I surprised myself!

If I had one super power, it would be to let me have the ability to have multiple me’s so one can work and one can go skatepark all day.

Derby and skating are important to me because skating and derby solves all of my problems. There is no bad day that a derby practice can’t make significantly better. Something about slamming into people and laughing a lot that works for me. Plus it’s an incredibly exciting game.

My teammates are all amazing, inspiring people who are working together to build a rock solid team and something that seems almost impossible: a warehouse in San Diego, with a banked track, on a DIY budget.

Skating for Slam Diego, not only do I get to constantly improve my skills and feel like a bad***, but I get to contribute to something so much bigger than myself. We’re fighting to keep banked derby alive in San Diego and I know we’re going to make it happen. 

Derby and skating are important to me because it is an outlet for me to let go of all the stress of work, kids, money, etc. and just feel strong and empowered.  I also love the community and family it has given me.

My favorite skating moment was my first Rollercon in 2019, I was a newby skater and was skating in a banked track mixed level bout which was mostly co-ed A level skaters.  I was terrified and so nervous but had so much fun.  My best derby moment ever was during this bout, when Dolly Spartan was jamming and I was blocking on the low and she tried to do an Apex jump.  I got her with my hip just right and she went flying..man that felt good!

If I had one super power, it would be super speed, so I could get to wherever I needed to be on the track no matter what.

Derby and skating are important to me because skating has always been my escape from reality and derby allowed me to do that with people who enjoy doing the same. 

My favorite skating moment has been as an official. Witnessing the last bank track bout at our old facility, watching the joy that everybody had for the game. The laughing, the crying, it made the community feel like home.

If I had one super power, it would be invincibility, no more injuries to take me out.

Derby and skating are important to me because not only is playing derby super fun... it has the best community of humans ever. Through derby I've met some of my closest friends and made some of my favorite memories. 

My favorite skating moment was when we were in Texas earlier this month. Slam Diego was playing our first "Texas style" derby game (which involves a lot of silly on-track shenanigans). The two teams had planned a "wolverine" during the second jam of the second half. Basically this means that both teams clear the benches in a big brawl. As the jam started the whole team just kept looking at each other like "now?... do we go now?...". Rounding turn two I looked down and all the sudden a bunch of our teammates were rolling around on the track "fighting" with Texas skaters. I looked over and caught Kim Kong's attention and we both just shrugged, grabbed each other by the jerseys, and joined the fight. It was so silly and fun and the memory def makes me smile when I think about it!

If I had one super power, it would be to be in more than one place at a time. Between my job at SDSU, my family and friends, roller derby, and my other hobbies... I never feel like I have enough time to do all the things I wanna do!

Derby and skating are important to me because it provides an outlet for me to pour my energy into. It's a great source of excersise and community. Starting roller derby was one of the best decisions my parents made for me. The people in it are amazing, considerate and strong athletes who strive for competition, growth and love.

My favorite skating moment was when I did a two 180 rotations, (one after a jumping rotation) on the apex during Battle on The Bank. I was so impressed with myself to have done that so carefully and off of instinct.

If I had one super power, it would be shape-shifting; I definitely would love to see how different organisms experience the world.

Derby and skating are important to me for my mental health, getting out of my head, connecting with my body, finding balance. All of these things I find at practice, playing derby, roller skating and are vital to my mental health.

My favorite skating moment was when I did a 180 jump on the straightaway and landxed it! I remember Dr. B and Killer Groove screamed in excitement. I was honestly shocked I had landed it!

If I had one super power, it would be having no anxiety or fear. Ever.

Derby and skating are important to me because it gives me a space to be myself.

My favorite skating moment was when we give high fives after every game.

If I had one super power, it would be to not be afraid!

Derby and skating are important to me because it's an incredibly empowering activity. It's queer and punk and hella fun! It's been such an amazing community to be a part of, and I truly enjoy coming to practices with friends.

My favorite skating moment was during my first game! I couldn't follow the rules at all, got knocked on my ass plenty, had no idea why I was in the penalty box, was forced to be a jammer a couple times, got goated constantly, but damn I had a blast! Everyone was so high-spirited and ready to rock!

If I had one super power, it would be ending racial capitalism, settler colonialism, and heteropatriarchy. Abolition now!

Derby and skating are important to me because derby is important to me because it is a place where I feel empowered and accepted. 

 My favorite skating moments are anytime I can skate on a banked track. 

If I had one super power, it would be teleportation so I could save money on travel!

Derby and skating are important to me because they allow me to be a part of such an amazing, inclusive, bad*** community and I feel more myself since starting to play.

My favorite skating moment is anytime you finish playing a tough game with a great team. The camaraderie after beating each other up is like nothing else.   

If I had one super power, it would be talking to animals!
